Bioluminescence In Cowichan Bay
Our night tours are some of the most special times paddling in Cowichan Bay. The times vary throughout the summer, as the days lengthen headed toward summer solstice, and then shorten after June 21st. We start these tours just before sunset, watching the colorful glow over the surrounding mountains, paddling slowly around the bay, waiting for darkness and the first light of the bioluminescence. The full moon nights give an added treat, but limit the visibility of the bioluminescence.
At night, little creatures that abound in Cowichan Bay start to light up when they are disturbed. Cowichan Bay is a long, narrow bay that does not get flushed out by currents or tide movements, providing an ideal environment for these little creatures to abound. We have seen the bioluminescence here between mid-March and mid-November, continuously. (And the only reason we have not seen it at the other times is because it is just a bit too cold for us to go out paddling at night!) The darkest nights are best (no moon, cloud cover), but the bioluminescence is visible even at full moon and clear skies, just not quite as spectacularly.
Our two hour bioluminescence tours sometimes go a little longer to make sure you get the best experience possible.
