Why can't I just rent a kayak without having done a course?
You can--a sit-on-top kayak. The biggest problem in our waters is the risk of hypothermia. The waters around Vancouver Island are cold all year long. Even in summer do they rarely get over 15 degrees. We have to make sure everyone can get out of the water within a few minutes. In a regular kayak, the cockpit can fill up with water, making it more difficult to get in and upright, and that usually leaves the cockpit full of water, so not really out of the water until it is pumped out. Sit-on-tops don't hold water, they are more stable than regular kayaks and are typically fairly easy to get back onto.

Is it dangerous to kayak in the bay?
As with the previous question, the biggest danger is being in the water too long and becoming hypothermic. A skilled kayaker should have no problem. Someone on a sit-on-top should not have much problem. The next biggest challenge is the boats, but you can see them coming.

Why should I go kayaking in Cowichan Bay?
Morning and evening waters tend to be very calm. The bay is protected except from the thermal winds typical along all of Vancouver Island. The real treat is the abundance of wildlife. The number of birds is phenomenal, and then there are the seals, river otters, sea lions, and orca. Generally, the bay is spectacular.

Do I have to wear a pfd?
We require you to wear your pfd.

What's the difference between a regular kayak and a sit-on-top?
A regular kayak has a cockpit that can be closed with a spray skirt. It also has hatches that can store gear and food for trips. A sit-on-top is a closed, flattened tube, full of air, so it is extremely buoyant. Sit-on-tops can be used by inexperienced paddlers because they are stable enough to climb back onto, whereas a regular sea kayak, can fill with water, creating other problems.
